There are so many definitions to this word that it is difficult to pinpoint an exact definition which has been universally accepted by people all over the world. So what is law?, you may ask. In a very general manner of speaking, law is a set of rules which are set down by an organization or authority to govern itself. In that sense, each and every organization in the world has its own set of rules and regulations. The school has its laws, so does the country and so does the club.
According to Wikipedia, law is a system of rules, usually enforced through a set of institutions.
Now, there is also a certain multiplicity when it comes to law because there are many different sub types which exist. For example there is contract law. This concerns everything relating to buying and trading, whether in a shop or the stock market. Then there is the complex property law which enforces certain regulations concerning personal (or chattel) property as well as real property. Then there is trust law which covers financial and investment assets. Tort law allows the party to claim for damages in case rights are violated or property is injured. There is compensation available.
Then there is the very vital constitutional law which leads to the development and the creation of newer laws. It also provides for the protection and enforcement of human rights, and also for election of the leaders of the country. Administrative law deals with the decisions of the agencies of the government agencies and regulates their workings. Then international law deals with the matters and affairs of the foreign countries and these affairs can be trade relations, environment, or military affairs. Thus there are numerous fields of law and these aforementioned ones are only a few examples among many, many more.
There are various ways in which the legal systems of different countries work. Firstly, there is always a major line which is drawn between what is known as private law and public law. While public law deals with matters relating to the state, the constitution, administration and even criminal law, private law concerns the actions of individuals and has contract, tort and property law under its purview. In countries where the civil law systems are followed, contract law and tort law are under a general sub heading called law of obligations. Trust law is under international conventions.
There are certain legal subjects, or rather, branches of law which are generally regarded as traditional core subjects and these are International, trusts, constitutional and administrative law,, tort, property law, contract and criminal law. However, in the current scenario, there are many more legal subjects and further disciplines of law which can have more importance and relevance in the contemporary world today. There is a numerous variety in the legal world with an immense amount of complexity.
